Take a look at our photostrip on the left to see some of the lovely dogs we've had the pleasure to experience through fostering and rescue.

Selby Pet Carers have years of experience in fostering and rehabilitating rescued dogs. We have never under-took rescue work on a large scale or for profit and have acted more as a 'rehabilitator' and 'loving home finder' to other desperately overcrowded rescue organisations. We only usually accept one dog at a time so we can fully assess and provide the love and care that is so often desperately needed.

Many of our dogs have been rescued from puppy farmers and have required complete training. Their primary purpose for the puppy farmer was to generate money by producing as many puppies as physically possible. When they can no longer produce puppies they are often 'retired'. To some large breeders this is to find decent homes, but sadly to the less scrupulous, it can mean a death sentence. Officially this is to be carried out by a vet using humane methods; unofficially by any method the puppy farmer deams appropriate, i.e. bullet or shovel to the back of the head.

All our dogs are examined by a vet at our local clinic and stay with us at least six months so that we can provide a complete holistic assessment and rehabilitation programme. We are then equiped with enough information about the dog to find a permanent loving placement.

We have also accepted small much-loved family dogs, who due to circumstances i.e. allergies, family breakdown etc, have required to be rehomed and the owners didn't want them to go to a rescue kennel. All the dogs in the panel are rescues and have since been trained and are now happy in caring homes.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

  • PHOTO 1: Meet Selby

Selby and her brother Frosty (7th Photo down) were rescued by paying £125.00 to travellers near Doncaster. Both pups were no more than 4 weeks old, in very poor condition and believed to be pedigree German Shepherds.

  • PHOTO 2: This is Teddy (Ted).

Ted came to us via the Dog Warden because he wasn't doing well in the rescue kennel at Church fenton. Teddy had been left chained to the kennels fencing around Christmas 2002. Initially Teddy had severe behaviour problems and he was prone to biting if under stress. It wasn't long before it became obvious that he had been physically mistreated. Teddy lived with us for over 8 months and gradually through a kind, calm, reward based training programme, he evolved into one of the most gentle natured dogs we've had the pleasure to interact with. Ted was rehomed with a newly married local couple.

  • PHOTOS 5 + 8: Misty-Moo

Misty-Moo came from a rescuer in Hereford who had saved her from a puppy farmer in South Wales. She had been sceduled for death. Sadly, Misty had never known any affection and had lived most of her 5 years in a 3x2 crate. When not in the crate she was shut up in a shed with other dogs and left to fight for her survival (many of the dogs didn't survive). Considering the lack of human contact that Misty had experienced, she was surprisingly always a beautiful, loving, and affectionate dog. The only training she required was housetraining and her aggression to other dogs (not surprising considering she had previously had to fight for her survival).

  • PHOTO 6: Toby

Toby is a King charles Spaniel and was rescued by our father from a puppy farmer near Malton, North Yorkshire. Toby now lives permanently with our father in Leeds.

These are just some of the little friends that we have been in a position to help. Our most recent 'foster guests' have been Patch a 3 year old Parson Jack Russell and Muriel, a 15 month old tri-coloured long haired Guinea Pig.

Patch came from a very loving home but due to unforseen circumstances was entrusted to our care for us to rehome. Patch is very fortunate because one of our regular clients has now officially adopted him as a companion to Penny.

(Penny is pictured on some of our other pages and also in our photo gallery)
